What is the ELDT Hazmat endorsement?

The Hazmat (H) endorsement is a federal add-on to your Commercial Driver's License that lets you legally haul loads requiring hazardous-materials placards under 49 CFR. Since February 7, 2022, the FMCSA requires every new H endorsement applicant to complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory through a provider listed on the federal Training Provider Registry before they can sit for the state HazMat knowledge test.

ABC Drive Pro CDL Stack is TPR-listed and reports your completion to the FMCSA the same day you finish — no waiting, no paperwork, no third-party fees.

The 6 FMCSA-mandated Hazmat theory topics

Per 49 CFR Part 380 Appendix B, every Hazmat ELDT course must cover these areas. ABC's adaptive engine finds your weak spots inside each topic and pushes targeted drills until you master them.

Purpose of Hazmat Regulations

Overview of 49 CFR, the HMR, and why federal rules exist to protect the public, drivers, and property from incidents involving hazardous materials.

Hazmat Classification & Placarding

The 9 hazard classes, division numbers, UN identification numbers, and when placards, markings, and labels are required on a commercial vehicle.

Shipping Papers & Emergency Response

Reading shipping papers, keeping them accessible in the cab, using the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG), and driver duties at an incident scene.

Loading, Unloading & Segregation

Attendance rules, no-smoking zones, compatibility charts, cargo securement, and prohibited combinations of hazardous materials in the same load.

Driving & Parking Rules

Routing restrictions, tunnel and bridge limitations, safe-haven parking rules, railroad crossings, and en-route inspection responsibilities.

Security Awareness & En-Route Security

Recognizing security risks, TSA-required security plan elements, and driver responsibilities under the FMCSA/TSA Hazmat security framework.

How to get your Hazmat endorsement — step by step

  1. 01

Hold a valid CDL (or CLP)

You need a Class A, B, or C CDL — or at minimum a CLP — before enrolling in the Hazmat ELDT theory course.

  2. 02

    Complete FMCSA ELDT Hazmat theory

Finish the full theory curriculum with a Training Provider Registry–listed provider like ABC Drive Pro Stack. Completion is reported directly to the FMCSA.

  3. 03

Apply for the TSA background check

Submit the TSA Hazardous Materials Endorsement Threat Assessment application, get fingerprinted, and pass the security threat assessment.

  4. 04

Pass the state HazMat knowledge test

Take the HazMat written exam at your state DMV/DDS. In Georgia, this is administered at any DDS Customer Service Center.

  5. 05

    Receive your H endorsement

Once ELDT, TSA, and the knowledge test are all complete, the DMV adds the H endorsement to your CDL — valid for the length of your license cycle.

Adaptive learning

How ABC's adaptive engine helps you pass Hazmat faster

Hazmat theory is dense — hazard-class charts, segregation tables, ERG lookups, security-plan rules. A one-shot classroom lecture leaves most students guessing. ABC Drive Pro Stack uses spaced repetition and diagnostic quizzing to isolate the exact placarding rules, shipping-paper details, and segregation combos where you slip, then serves targeted micro-drills until they're locked in.

  • Diagnostic quiz on day one maps your baseline across all 6 Hazmat topics.
  • Weak-spot drills replay the exact hazard-class or segregation rules you miss.
  • Full-length HazMat practice exams mirror the state knowledge-test format.
  • Real CDL instructors on standby by phone or WhatsApp — not offshore chat.
  • Same-day Training Provider Registry submission when you complete the course.

Frequently asked questions

Is ELDT training required for the Hazmat endorsement?

Yes. Since February 7, 2022, the FMCSA requires all applicants seeking a new Hazmat (H) endorsement to complete ELDT theory from a Training Provider Registry–listed provider before taking the state HazMat knowledge test.

How long does ELDT Hazmat training take?

There is no minimum hour requirement — FMCSA sets a proficiency standard, not seat time. Most students complete ABC's adaptive Hazmat theory in 8–15 hours of study spread over 1–2 weeks.

Do I still need a TSA background check for Hazmat?

Yes. ELDT theory is separate from the TSA Hazardous Materials Endorsement Threat Assessment. You must complete both the ELDT theory and the TSA background check before your state DMV issues the H endorsement.

How much does the ABC ELDT Hazmat course cost?

$475 one-time. That includes the full FMCSA theory curriculum, adaptive practice tests, and same-day Training Provider Registry submission.

Does Hazmat ELDT include behind-the-wheel training?

No. The FMCSA does not require BTW hours for the Hazmat endorsement — it is a theory-only requirement plus the TSA background check and state knowledge test.
