Pre-Trip Inspection Visual Appendix

School-bus-specific walkthrough aligned to the state DMV/DDS 115-point scoring criteria. Each line names the component, what you must say and show, and the defect that fails the point.

External Light Check & Strobe

8-way warning system (amber + red), alternating flashers, strobe, and crossing arms.

  • Amber warning lights (4)

    Check: Activate pre-stop; both front and both rear ambers alternate evenly.

    Defect: Lens cracked, faded, or a lamp that fails to alternate.

  • Red warning lights (4)

    Check: Activate on door opening; alternate with amber cut-off.

    Defect: Any red lamp out — bus is out of service for student transport.

  • Roof strobe

    Check: Operates independently of the 8-way system; visible 360°.

    Defect: Dim, cracked, or non-rotating strobe lens.

  • Stop-arm lamps

    Check: Both stop-arm lamps flash when the arm extends.

    Defect: Non-flashing lamp or burnt bulb.

  • Clearance/ID lamps

    Check: All roof marker lamps, side markers, and reflectors intact and lit.

    Defect: Missing lens, moisture inside, or dead lamp.

  • Headlights, tail, brake, turn

    Check: High/low beam, brake activation, both-side turn signals, backup lamps and alarm.

    Defect: Inoperative backup alarm or any dead lamp.
